Context Collapse

Salon Series: The Digital Transformation of the Public Sphere

Kick-off event: May 11, 2023

Program: Our event series will be kicked off by the great, interesting, and inspiring Reem Ahmed and Hendrik Meyer! Reem is a researcher at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) and a PhD Candidate at the University of Hamburg, Faculty of Law. She will be talking about online extremism and the role and responsibilities of digital media platforms. Hendrik is a PhD researcher at the Chair of Communication Studies, esp. Climate and Science Communication at the University of Hamburg and part of the “(De-)polarization of Public Debates“ project at the New Institute. His input will focus on the impact of digital media on discursive polarization and the question whether polarization is as problematic as its reputation suggests.

Format: Context Collapse aims to provide a space to encourage discussion and conversation among its participants, following the salon tradition. We therefore refrain from the classic lecture model and instead focus on short input segments, followed by informal discussions in small groups in the speak, discuss, and shuffle format. The evening will be rounded up with a casual get together along with amenities such as beer, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and snacks (we don’t have any funding in the background, so a small donation would be very welcome).

Date: The event will take place monthly. The kick-off event is on May 11, 2023 at 7pm. The following events will be on June 8 and July 6.

Location: The event will wander around Hamburg. The kick-off will take place at the Leibniz-Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institute. The address is Rothenbaumchaussee 36, 20148 Hamburg.
